- Apostille of documents:
An Apostille is a Seal along with the signature of the authorised signatory or Notary of the country from where the document has originated which ensures the captioned documents will be accepted in the countries under the Hague Convention. The Hague Convention(2) (HCCH 1961 Apostille Convention) was signed on 05th October 1961, and in total there are 120 contracting member countries. The convention was agreed upon and signed by the countries with the aim of abolishing the Requirement of Legalisation for Foreign Public Documents which facilitates the use of public documents abroad. The purpose of the Convention is to abolish the ongoing requirement of legalisation, replacing the often long and costly legalisation process with the issuance of a single Apostille certificate by a Competent Authority at the country of document origination.
India became a member of Hague nations in the year 2005 which does not require foreign public document legalisation.
An apostille is required in various documents issued by the state government or bodies in the state such as birth certificates, marriage certificates, death certificates, power of Attorneys, Affidavits, educational records, declarations etc.
The Ministry of External Affairs typically plays a vital role in providing the apostille of the documents. In the documents to be apostilled even minor details are inspected before authorization. The apostille is valid for a period of six months.
MEA Apostille Procedure:

Steps
- Document Authentication/Verification:
All the original documents that are to be apostilled from MEA are first to be verified by the Authority of the Issuing State Government.
- Educational Documents are to be attested with the seal and signature of the authorised signatory by the Department of Education or Human Resource Development Department of the state or union territory.
- Other Documents that are non-educational in nature are to be verified with the seal and signature of the Home Department or General Administration department of the state issuing document.
- Commercial documents are to be verified by the respective trade and chambers of the concerned state with the chamber of commerce and trade seal and the signature of the signing authority.2. Apostille:
Going further Ministry of External Affairs apostilles the documents by affixing an Apostille sticker on the back side of the document to be apostilled(3) on the basis of the document verification done by the authorities of the State Government, Union Territory or Trade chamber.
2. Attestation of documents:
In the countries wherein the document, an apostille is not accepted or is not required as a formal verification procedure as the nation may not be part of the Hague Convention the MEA provides an attestation service for the same and MEA attested document serves the purpose of verifying the authenticity of the issued document.
