An Act of the Madhya Pradesh Legislature established Devi Ahilya Vishwavidyalaya, previously University of Indore, in 1964. The institution was founded in 1964 by Dr. Zakir Hussain, India’s Vice President at the time. The university’s jurisdiction was limited to the Indore district.

The institution was renamed ‘Devi Ahilya Vishwavidyalaya’ in 1988 after the Holkar Maharani ‘Devi Ahilya Bai Holkar’ of the Maratha Empire. Devi Ahilya Vishwavidyalaya is derived from the Hindi word vishwavidyalaya, which means university.

Its jurisdiction was expanded to include the Indore division, which includes seven districts, during university reform.

On Rabindranath Tagore Marg in Indore, the university’s administrative offices and elementary school campus are located. The Takshashila Campus, located on Khandwa Road, is a university-managed extension campus. The university is in charge of all three campuses’ schools. In the Indore division, there are other other colleges affiliated with the university. More than 300 associated colleges provide instruction in fundamental and professional topics at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The institution has a total of 9000 students on campus and approximately 300,000 in linked colleges.

Academic classes are held in Takshila parisar (campus) of the university, which covers an area of 510 acres, and Avanti parisar (campus), which covers an area of 154 acres. The Nalanda parisar (campus) covers 100 acres and is used for administrative and official purposes.
