All degree colleges in present-day Jharkhand (excluding Santhal Parganas) were affiliated with Patna University prior to the creation of Ranchi University. Ranchi Institution was founded as a teaching and research university on July 12, 1960. All degree colleges in present-day Jharkhand fell under the jurisdiction of Ranchi University when it was founded. Bishnudeo Narayan Singh was named as the university’s first vice-chancellor.

By bifurcating Ranchi University in 1992, Vinoba Bhave University was formed, cutting its jurisdiction area by about half. The institution was further divided in 2009, with Nilamber Pitamber University in Medininagar becoming in January 2009 and Kolhan University in Chaibasa forming in August 2009. Ranchi University currently has jurisdiction over the colleges in Jharkhand’s five districts, namely Ranchi, Gumla, Khunti, Simdega, and Lohardaga.

Undergraduate and postgraduate courses in medical, engineering, liberal arts, and other fields are offered by the university and its affiliated colleges and institutions. Ranchi University primarily offers postgraduate liberal arts courses on its own campus, while allied colleges and institutes offer professional and liberal undergraduate degree programs. The linked institutions also provide professional postgraduate courses (such as M.Tech, MD, and Ms).

The results of the higher secondary (10+2) examination are used to determine admission to undergraduate liberal arts degree programs. However, to be admitted to undergraduate degrees in professional areas such as medicine and engineering, one must pass a national entrance examination (NEET UG or JEE). Admission to postgraduate programs is determined by undergraduate degree results as well as the results of an entrance examination administered by the university or a national organization. Those interested in research-level programs must first pass an entrance exam, followed by an interview. Ranchi University also has a Directorate of Distant Education that oversees distance education postgraduate studies.
